Sharpening Workshop for Beginning Sharpeners

Jerry Hall, Instructor

Jerry will lead the hands-on class teaching the basics of sharpening and setting up your sharpening station.  There will be 6 sharpening stations, each with 2 students and an experienced coach.  Class size is limited to 12 students.

This class is for those still learning sharpening, those who want to tune up their sharpening skills and those who want to know how to shape a bowl gouge.  CLICK HERE for the sharpening handbook that is the basis for the class.

We will teach one “ middle of the road” sharpening method and one set of tool shapes. Club tools will be used to practice sharpening.  No personal tools please, except you may bring your new or old bowl gouge to reshape.

Learn what it takes to shape and maintain basic turning tools using a grinder and the Oneway/Wolverine sharpening system.

Also view this fine Thompson Tools video that covers, sharpening, tool steels and tips on how  to correct sharpening errors.

Need to invest in a sharpening system?   Here is a good basic system for about $224

  • The Rikon slow speed grinder with 2 good aluminum oxide wheels is on sale for $100 at Rockler store in Rocklin thru March.
  • The Oneway Basic Sharpening System #2291 and original  VariGrind #2480 totals about $124 from Hartville Tool with a 15% club discount.  Free shipping, no sales tax.  Club must have submitted your name and you must ask for discount in comments area.

Even if you are not planing on attending this workshop , the club needs feed back in order to plan future sharpening workshops.  It would be appreciated if you would  fill out this short questionnaire.
